We need to preserve seeds to ensure food security
18 December 2023
As reported by Food Tank, preserving seeds now will safeguard food systems later. In fact, regaining control over our food production and creating robust local food systems can be achieved through seed preservation.
One recent analysis examines recent changes in digital agriculture and the global seed market, revealing a pattern of progression and consolidation. The article’s first critical critique served as the foundation for this investigation. Furthermore, it discloses that a just four businesses hold over half of the world’s seed sales.
The recent update on the global seed industry and digital agriculture reveals ongoing trends of consolidation and transformation within the agrochemical and seed sectors. Over the last few years, firms like Bayer, BASF, Corteva, and Sinochem have escalated, leading to increased control and concentration of power in the industry.
Technological giants and non-agricultural firms like Google, Microsoft, and Bosch are also making quick advances into digital agriculture at the same time, providing anything from AI-driven solutions to automated machinery. Though feeding a larger population is promised, worries about potential inequality and the possibility of trapping farmers in industrial systems loom. Opponents point out that overproduction supported by the government is still a significant issue and is creating an unsustainable agricultural model.
This update emphasises how corporate consolidation, technological advancements, and the complexity of the world’s food supply are intertwined. In these developing fields, it encourages responsible innovation and critical analysis.
