MEPs urged to repel CAP amendments on denominations of plant-based products

28 August 2020

On 28 August 2020, SAFE and 34 other organizations urged Members of the European Parliament in a letter to oppose several amendments forcing the use of terms such as “steak”, “sausage”, “escalope”, “burger” or “hamburger” exclusively for products of animal origin.

The adoption of such amendments would mean that it is not possible to use such terms for describing plant-based products that have been developed and formulated as alternatives to meat products, whereas the use of such terms for non-meat products supports consumers in making informed choices while at the same time clearly indicating that the product does not contain any meat.
