MEPs for the environment support a Parliament – Council agreement on nature restoration

29 November 2023

Negotiators from the Council and Parliament have reached a tentative political agreement that moves the EU closer to passing a crucial nature restoration bill. This legislation aims to rejuvenate European habitats, targeting the restoration of 20% of land and sea areas by 2030 and achieving full ecosystem restoration by 2050.

Until, 2030, one of the main provisions is to give priority to the rehabilitation of habitats that are in poor condition, particularly within Natura 2000 sites. Along with measures for agricultural and urban ecosystems, the bill places special emphasis on reversing the reductions in pollinator populations and revitalising drained peatlands.

Although the agreement is still pending final approval, it offers potential economic benefits, and is in line with residents’ expectations for the preservation of biodiversity.
