Hypoglycaemia doubles as a result of food insecurity, research shows

Food insecurity is a major issue for everyone, but for diabetics, there is added risk that it could lead to hypoglycaemia. According to new research, hypoglycaemia is twice as common among those who find it difficult to afford food as those who don’t, as described in this FoodNavigator article.

This is concerning. In its Manifesto, SAFE reminds of the importance of food security and food inclusion and flags how food inflation can impact consumers’ consumption habits and their health.

Consumers’ purchasing power is often reduced, affecting their ability to purchase fresh and healthy food. Trade policies that do not reduce the final cost of food products, even when production cost has decreased, should be considered an unfair practice.
SAFE calls for the protection of consumers’ purchasing power, enabling them to buy fresh and healthy food. And advocates for better rules on food donations, in order to promote food redistribution.
