Food security, shortages in funding force food rationing and cuts in food assistance

According to an article by Nutrition Insights, the UN World Food Program (WFP) is struggling to cope with skyrocketing food prices and inadequate funding, resulting in difficult decisions and cuts in food assistance in hunger-stricken countries.

More than 200,000 refugees in Tanzania will have to endure reduced rations due to a funding shortfall of $21 million. Similar cuts in aid are being experienced by Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, and Congolese refugees in Burundi.

In addition, the WFP has suspended food aid to 200,000 Palestinians and faces challenges delivering food in war-torn Sudan and drought-stricken Somalia. The WFP urgently requires $810 million in the next six months for life-saving assistance in the Horn of Africa. Yemen, Myanmar, Mali, and other countries also require immediate funding.

The WFP warns that hunger levels are worsening globally, and the severity of hunger is reaching unprecedented levels. Compounded by conflicts, climate extremes, and economic shocks, the situation is becoming increasingly dire. The WFP’s funding for this year is significantly below its target, hampering its ability to reach those in need.
