Commissioner Kyriakides respond to 34 MEPs’ letter on E171

23 January 2020

On 17 December 2019, a cross-party coalition of 34 MEPs sent a letter to Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakides to ask for an extension of the French ban on the white colourant E171 to the entire EU. In the response to the MEPs’s letter on 15 January 2020, Commissioner Kyriakides underlined that the conclusion on the authorisations of E171 will be drawn based on the safety assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which is being carried out and expected to complete by the end of 2020.

The Commission has recognised the uncertainties and data gaps surrounding the risk assessment of E171. However, they emphasised that “these uncertainties have not prevented EFSA from concluding that current use of E171 does not pose a safety concern to consumers”.
