A new EU agency for health considered by the European Commission

The European Commission (EC) is considering strengthening the EU’s competence in health policy in the wake of the covid -19 crisis. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EC would come forward with a legislative proposal to create a new agency, the European Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, in 2021. The new agency would aim to enhance the EU’s capacity to respond to cross-border threats.

This new agency would function alongside a strengthened European Medicines Agency and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
