SAFE’s 10th Annual Conference discussed key topics about consumer protection regarding food, food waste, and sustainability, with a focus on sustainable packaging through the R3PACK project, and with the participation of Members of European Parliament and representatives from the European Commission, along with other guests from industry, academia, and other civil society organisations.
R3PACK is a three-year EU-funded project, developing packaging reuse schemes and fibre-based packaging. Its outcomes were presented by Frank Gana and the team of French environmental consultancy (RE)SET.
The Annual Conference hosted the presentation of BiteWatch, SAFE’s new food scanner application for smartphones with valuable information about thousands of food products and available for iPhone and Android, in English, Spanish, French, Dutch, and Italian.
It displays nutritional information like levels of salt, sugar, and saturated fat, as well as details on additives, degree of processing, and whether the product is vegan or vegetarian, empowering consumers to make healthy and conscious food choices.
Misleading labelling practices in food products, innovations for food waste reduction across the food chain, and sustainability from the angle of geographical indications were also discussed.
Together with its members from across the European Union, SAFE has identified 10 key priorities that need to be addressed and drive future EU food policies, following a horizontal and multistakeholder approach.
